Abstract
The human oral cavity as an organ has numerous unique features that differe ntiate it from other organs in the body. Maxilla and mandible are the only bones that contain various type of epithelial inclusions which closely related to occurrence of odontogenic tumors.
It is well known that statistical analysis of tumors is the most effective and basic methods for clarification of etiology and mechanisms of tumor.
But, in Korea, there are few statistical studies for odontogenic tumors.
Therefore, the authors have studied clinically and histopathlogically on one hundred and five biopsy specimens collected from Department of OraP Pathology, College of Dentistry, Seoul National University, during the period of May, 1958 to November, 1975 which had been diagnosed as odontogenic tumors.
The results were as follows;
1. In the 105 cases of odntogenic tumors, the highest incidence was 71 cases(67. 6o) of ameloblastomas, and next was 10 cases(5.7 0) of myxomas and/or myxofibromas, 6 of cementomas, 4 of eementifying fibromas, each 3 of odontogenic fibromas, ameloblastic odontomas and each 2 of adenomatoid odontogenic tumors, ameloblastic fibromas, malignant ameloblastomas and composite odontomas.
2. In the sexual incidence of 71 cases of ameloblastomas, 39 cases(54.9a ) were in male end 32 cases (45.1%) were in female.
3. In the ameloblastomas, average age of patients was 34 years.
4. As to the distribution of ameloblastomas, predominant location was in the mandible revealing 67 cases(94.4% ), and maxilla revealed only 4 cases (5.6%) and 1 case was originated from the buccal mucosa.
5 Among all of the 105 odontogenic tumors, 55 cases (52.4%) were in male and 50 cases (47.6%) were in female, and 19 cases (18.1%) were in maxilla and 86 cases (81.9%) were in mandible. Average age of patients was 33 years.
